For many veterans, the words "medical exam" are a major roadblock. Whether it’s a service-connected back injury, PTSD, or just the hassle of scheduling a physical, traditional life insurance can feel out of reach.
This is where No-Exam Life Insurance comes in. For veterans, this isn't just a convenience—it’s often a guaranteed right.
What is No-Exam Life Insurance?
Simply put, it’s a policy that doesn't require a nurse to come to your house for blood work or a physical. There are two main versions you’ll encounter:
Simplified Issue: You answer a few health questions on an application, but skip the physical exam.
Guaranteed Issue: No health questions, no exam, no exceptions. If you meet the age or disability criteria, you are in.
The Veteran Advantage: VGLI & VALife
The VA offers two powerhouse "no-exam" options that are often better than what you’ll find on the open market.
1. The VGLI "Window" (Term)
If you apply for Veterans’ Group Life Insurance (VGLI) within 240 days of separating, it is a guaranteed "no-exam" policy.
The Benefit: You get to keep your full SGLI coverage amount (up to $500,000) regardless of your health.
The Risk: If you wait until Day 241, the VA will require a medical health statement to approve you.
2. VALife (Whole Life)
Launched in 2023, VALife is a "Guaranteed Issue" whole life policy for veterans with any service-connected disability rating (0–100%).
The Benefit: Total peace of mind. You cannot be turned down for health reasons, and your rates are locked in for life.
The Catch: There is a two-year waiting period before the full benefit is payable. If you pass away during those first two years, your family receives your premiums back plus interest.
Pros vs. Cons of Skipping the Exam
The Pros | The Cons |
Speed: Approvals often happen in minutes. | Cost: No-exam policies usually have higher premiums because the insurer is taking on more "unknown" risk. |
Accessibility: Ideal for veterans with chronic injuries or PTSD who might be denied private plans. | Limits: Coverage amounts are often capped (e.g., VALife is capped at $40,000). |
Privacy: No needles, no scales, no invasive questions. | Wait Periods: Some policies (like VALife) have a 2-year wait before the full payout is active. |
The Bottom Line
No-exam insurance is a lifeline for veterans who have "taken a few hits" during their service. If you are within your first 240 days of separation, VGLI is almost always your best no-exam bet. If you’ve been out longer and have a disability rating, VALife is the safest way to ensure your final expenses are covered.
