Immediate Steps

First 24-48 hours

Obtain multiple certified copies of the death certificate (at least 10-15)

Notify the VA by calling 1-800-827-1000

Contact the Defense Finance and Accounting Service (DFAS) if applicable

Notify Social Security Administration at 1-800-772-1213

Contact all life insurance companies to file claims

Notify the bank and any financial institutions

Contact employer's HR department regarding benefits

First Week

Days 3-7

Apply for VA Dependency and Indemnity Compensation (DIC)

Apply for VA Survivors Pension if eligible

File for SGLI/VGLI life insurance benefits

Contact mortgage company about payment options

Review and update all account beneficiaries

Begin gathering documents for estate settlement

Consult with a veterans service organization (VSO)

First Month

Weeks 2-4

Apply for VA education benefits (Chapter 35 DEA)

Apply for CHAMPVA health coverage if eligible

Review and adjust household budget

Meet with a financial advisor specializing in veterans

Update all legal documents (wills, POA, etc.)

Apply for VA home loan assumption if applicable

Consider grief counseling resources through VA
