Immediate Steps
First 24-48 hours
Obtain multiple certified copies of the death certificate (at least 10-15)
Notify the VA by calling 1-800-827-1000
Contact the Defense Finance and Accounting Service (DFAS) if applicable
Notify Social Security Administration at 1-800-772-1213
Contact all life insurance companies to file claims
Notify the bank and any financial institutions
Contact employer's HR department regarding benefits
First Week
Days 3-7
Apply for VA Dependency and Indemnity Compensation (DIC)
Apply for VA Survivors Pension if eligible
